From modest beginnings the Ipswich Hospital Band has progressed to become one of the best in the area and is now very much in demand for concerts, summer fetes and a wide variety of other engagements.
Over the years the band has raised thousands of pounds for numerous health-related charities and other worthy causes. Throughout the year the band regularly performs in concerts and at fetes and other outdoor events, such as the Suffolk Show. It takes part in carol and church services on hospital sites and in the local area. Every year culminates in the traditional playing of carols around the wards at Ipswich Hospital on Christmas morning.
In 1998 the concept of Music for Health began and, with the help of grants, local sponsorship, donations and fund raising events organised by the band, was developed into a community project and awarded charitable status. As a result Music for Health has been adopted as working title and incorporated into the band’s logo.
The band continues to grow from strength to strength and we celebrated our 30th Anniversary in 2006.
Under the baton of Rachel Chester, the St Peter's Band is a newly formed band under the Ipswich Hospital Band banner.
The band performed at it's first concert in March 2010 and will be featured at many events this year, both in St Peter's by the Waterfront and around the Ipswich area.
The Training Section was formed in September 2003 and at the time consisted mainly of complete beginners and a few who had limited playing experience. Since then it has grown and performs at various times of the year with the other bands.
The members of the bands are very musically active, and have also formed ensembles which play out in public at various events, from fetes and weddings to churches and army officer mess nights.
Currently there is a Wind Ensemble and a Brass Ensemble within the band, but a Big Band group has also played on the odd occassion as well.
The Ipswich Hospital Band and St Peter's Band mainly accepts bookings for concerts in aid of health-related charities and other similar worthy causes.
A nominal fee is charged to help cover expenses. Brass and Wind ensembles of approximately eight to twelve players can also be provided to perform fanfares for ceremonial occasions, music for church services, or social events. Commercial bookings for smaller events such as weddings and dinners are also accepted.
