Assistant Musical Director - Bernard Westren
Having played tenor sax semi-professionally in a Soul Band in the late ‘60s, Bernard had to abandon that ‘career’ to concentrate on his Sociology degree. This was followed by further study and teaching abroad before returning to the to raise a family. With no real intention of returning to music, he was asked to teach at the newly formed Co-op Music School in 1989 and to play clarinet in the Holywells High School production of Joseph. He also joined the Ipswich Hospital Band who were surprisingly short of clarinet players at the time.
As well as playing the clarinet, he attempts to play all the saxes, piano, electric keyboard and the flute.
In 1997 he formed the Westwind Saxophone Quartet and in 2000 became Director of the Co-op Music School ’s Orchestral Ensemble. In 2001 he formed the Hospital Band’s Jazz Ensemble and in 2004 was asked to be the Assistant Musical Director of the Main Band.
Since 2004 Bernard has committed himself totally to Music through instrumental teaching and directing and confined Sociology to the annual marking of exam papers!
In 2007 the Board of Directors asked if he would manage the St. Peter’s Project when it opens in 2008.
