Training Section

The Training Section was formed in September 2003 and at the time consisted mainly of complete beginners and a few who had limited playing experience. Since then it has grown, developed, and evolved into 2 groups, the foundation group and the intermediate band.

FOUNDATION GROUP

The Foundation Group (beginners to grade/level 2) rehearses on Mondays evenings from 6.15pm.during school terms. Depending on vacancies being available, the intake of beginners takes place at designated times during the year.

INTERMEDIATE BAND

The Intermediate Band (grade/level 3 to 5) also rehearses on Monday evenings and undertakes public performances. These include regular performances at Main Band concerts, fetes throughout the year and carols at Christmas.

THE AIMS OF THE TRAINING SECTION ARE TO:

  • Create an enjoyable learning environment in order to
  • Play an instrument
  • Develop the skills of reading music
  • Develop general musicianship
  • Graduate from the Foundation Group to the Intermediate Band and the Main band (grade/level 6 upwards)

Applications are welcomed from any member of the community from 9 years of age upwards. There is an annual membership fee. For anyone receiving school or private lessons, the aim is to consolidate tuition being given. For anyone who is not having lessons, the aim is to help learners achieve a similar standard.

INSTRUMENTS and HOME PRACTISE

For those who do not have an instrument there are a limited number available to hire from the band. Alternatively, details about hiring from music shops can be provided. It is expected that learners will take good care of their instrument and commit to a certain amount of home practise so that they will succeed and progress with their instrument.

ENSEMBLES

When members reach the required standard, they will get the opportunity to participate in Brass, Jazz and Wind Ensembles.

IN-HOUSE ASSESSMENTS

The band offers yearly ‘in-house’ Grade1-4 level assessments based on the criteria used by the Associated Board examination system. The aim is to provide members with an independent assessment of their ability and level of playing and a certificate is awarded. The pieces, studies, sight-reading, aural and scales are drawn from the syllabus of an external examination.

CHILD PROTECTION

The band has adopted the S.A.F.E. Child Protection Policy. All tutors in the Training Section have attended S.A.F.E training and have had the appropriate Criminal Records Bureau screening. Every member receives the band’s Child Protection Information.
