St Peter's Project

Updates about the St Peter’s Project can now be found on the St Peter’s by the Waterfront web site.

In April 2006 the Heritage Lottery fund awarded us £772,000 to enable the refurbishment of St Peter’s Church Ipswich-one of the redundant Mariners Churches adjoining an area which is currently undergoing extensive redevelopment-and convert it to a centre for Music and the Arts.

Further financial assistance was given by Ipswich Borough Council, and the Ipswich Historic Churches Trust, the balance of the total cost of refurbishment will come from our own fundraising.  

Local contractor RG CARTER was awarded the contract, and work commenced in May 2007, This will see the installation of a tiered stage. A 205 seat auditorium and stage sound and light systems.. There will also be some conservation work to the building, and a range of artefacts and display boards will tell the story of the Church from 1130 ad. This display will include the IPSWICH CHARTER HANGINGS and the TOURNAI MARBLE FONT and we expect this to be of major interest to local and international visitors.

The entire project is being managed by the band, and one of our directors Mr Bernard  Westren will manage the centre when it opens in Spring 2008.

The venue will be available for hire for events and rehearsals, and this medium sized auditorium will appeal to local organisations who do not wish  to ,or cannot afford to hire the larger venues. The Church is planned to open daily for visitors.
