The Ipswich Hospital Band returned to Ireland this year, from 26th July – 2nd August, for its second visit. Again, we were based in Tipperary, staying in lodges within the grounds of the Glen Aherlow House Hotel, in the midst of the idyllic Glen of Aherlow. On the Monday evening, the band performed on the hotel’s terrace, in aid of Breast Cancer Awareness; and this was followed by a ‘Moonlight Walk’ for the ladies, around the hotel grounds - which some of the ladies travelling with the band participated in!
During the week, the band also played out on several occasions –twice in Tipperary (in the main High Street and on the town bandstand), and also in Cork city centre (as part of an International Music Festival).
Throughout our stay, we were made very welcome by our host band, the C.J.Kickham Brass and Reed Band, whose home is in Tipperary town centre. On the Thursday and Saturday evenings, we joined them, along with St. John’s Band (from Limerick) to perform at the Ballykisteen Hotel in Tipperary and in the Augustinian Church in Limerick City Centre. With 90 musicians playing altogether, it was a wonderful sound and experience!
A good time was had by us all, and everyone enjoyed re-acquainting friendships with members of the C.J.Kickham Brass and Reed Band.
